Why VO₂max Matters Beyond Running
One number can tell us something powerful about the capacity of your cardiovascular system — but it isn't just an athlete's metric.
VO₂max represents the maximum amount of oxygen your body can use during intense exercise. Put simply, it reflects the ability of your heart, lungs, blood vessels and working muscles to deliver and use oxygen when demand becomes high.
That's why runners and cyclists pay so much attention to it. But VO₂max has relevance far beyond race performance.
Think Capacity, Not Competition
Imagine two people climbing several flights of stairs. For one, the effort represents a relatively small percentage of their available capacity. For the other, the same task pushes them close to their limit.
The task hasn't changed. Their capacity has.
That concept matters in everyday life. A larger aerobic engine can make ordinary physical demands relatively easier and provides greater capacity for demanding activities.
Don't Obsess Over the Watch
Most consumer wearables estimate VO₂max rather than directly measuring it in a laboratory. That makes the trend particularly useful.
Instead of reacting to every one-point movement, observe what happens over months. Is your aerobic capacity improving? Stable? Declining? And does that direction make sense given your training and lifestyle?
How Do You Build It?
Different training intensities contribute differently to aerobic development.
- Easy aerobic work builds the foundation for sustainable endurance
- Higher-intensity intervals challenge the upper end of aerobic capacity
- Strength training helps preserve the muscular system that ultimately has to use that capacity
- Recovery allows adaptation to occur
The answer therefore isn't simply: train harder.
Apply the right stimulus. Recover. Adapt. Repeat.
The Bigger Performance Question
VO₂max becomes particularly interesting when we stop treating it purely as a running statistic. Ask instead: how much physical capacity am I building for the life I want to live?
- Not just for your next 10K
- For travel
- For demanding days
- For recreational sport
- For ageing
- For remaining physically capable decades from now
The ReGenX Perspective
Human performance isn't about becoming an endurance athlete. It's about developing enough capacity that life's demands consume less of your available reserve.
VO₂max gives us one lens into that capacity.
Don't train simply to improve the number on your watch. Build the engine. Let the number follow.
